COUNSELING

STEP-BY-STEP LIVING A LESS STRESSFUL LIFE
Terri's Office

Initial Assessment

Sometimes people feel very anxious about their first appointment with a therapist. Here is a general idea of what you can expect: You will be asked to complete some paperwork in my waiting area. I will offer you some herbal tea to make this a little more comfortable.

We will then discuss discuss the reason you made the appointment. As we talk about this, I will ask some questions that help give me a good idea about what is going on.

If I suspect that you or someone you care about has an addiction or health issue, we will discuss this in more detail. I have had extensive experience in working with clients with physical illnesses. Psychological counseling needs to come after addictions or physical health problems have been ruled out. Counseling will not work if there is an untreated underlying health/addiction issue. This also includes sleep-related problems. Research indicates sleep deprivation is closely related to feeling stressed and depressed and is also linked to weight issues.

Stress Management

It’s important to understand what is in your control and what is not. Stressing about things that you have no control over makes you feel worse and does not solve anything. I will help you design your own stress management program using a holistic approach.

Depression

When treating depression, I try to avoid using medications. Recent research indicates that anti-depressants are only useful for major depression. Many of the clients that I see have symptoms of depression, which may be best treated with a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, diet, meditation and exercise.

Anxiety

Again, I try to avoid encouraging medication. I help my clients to identify anxiety triggers, practice breathing techniques, and creative visualization. Clients learn to identify thoughts that lead to feelings of panic and anxiety.

Relationships

Managing differences may be difficult in the best of relationships. If external stressors are present, managing those differences can become almost impossible. In working with couples, I will quickly assess their relationship using a measuring scale that I have developed myself. This helps to get to the root of the problem so the relationship improve quickly.

There may be times when it is time to end a marriage. If that occurs, I try to help my clients through that difficult time with as much support as possible. This may include breaking the news to family and friends, helping children through the process and rebuilding a sense of family in a new kind of way.

"I truly appreciate all of your assistance during the transition and closing of our Schaumburg office. I have received numerous comments about the excellent service that you provided to our employees and management team. I can’t thank you enough for your professionalism and knowledge. You made a difference in our employees lives and helped us to leave a positive memory about the FDIC for our temporary/term staff.”
